Sacramento Regional Fire Diversity Committee:
Our Council is a charter member of the Sacramento Regional Fire Diversity Committee. The Committee was formed in 2017 in response to pressure from community service organizations (e.g., NAACP, the Urban League, La Familia LULAC Council 2862, etc.) due to the lack of diversity in the Fire Service. The Committee is comprised of community organizations and the seven major Fire Departments in the greater Sacramento Area.
To improve diversity, the Committee has developed a Strategic Plan with specific goals and objectives to change the demographics of the Fire Departments to resemble the community they serve. In general, the approach is to focus on under represented groups by providing them with information on what qualifications are required to become an EMT, Paramedic, and ultimately a Firefighter and what resources are available to attain these requirements.
Our Council provided the technical expertise to develop the Committee’s website, myfirecareer.org, and several recruitment brochures (e.g., “Veterans” and “Women in Fire”). Additional recruitment brochures, focused on our community, are in the works. Also, we work with La Familia and Fire Departments, as they organize special fire service orientation training sessions for the community.
Council members are encouraged to participate in this project as there is much more work to be done even as we are slowly witnessing some success for our efforts.

Education Committee of LULAC 2862:
The Education Committee of LULAC 2862, has worked for over eight years to insist upon improved funding and improved instruction for English Language Learners in the Sacramento City Unified Schools. We have participated in trainings on the LCAP ( Local Control Accountability Plan) testified before the Board, met with District administrations, and filed legal complaints alleging noncompliance with state regulations by the district and, at times,-we have cooperated with district administrations.
Our work is in cooperation with the Sacramento Community Priorities Coalition to advance a needed equity agenda in Sacramento schools.
Interested persons are encouraged to volunteer in their local school, to join the District English Advisory Committee and to work with the LULAC Education Committee to continue this unfinished business.
